Sold one more piece and got some local press coverage

Not a bad day yesterday. We sold one more piece of Iceland and raised a further $100. Then a local online news site www.huni.is did a little article about us. So all in all a great weekend and things are really rolling.

We were interviewed twice today. First we were interviewed by the Finnish National Broadcasting network YLE TV2. That interview will air next friday and you can watch it online here: http://www.yle.fi/tv2/ on friday the 21st of November in a program called Attu or A2 (didn’t quite understand their accent). We were also interviewed by The Wall Street Journal. We’ll try and keep you all posted on when that interview will be published. Now we’re really on a roll. We sold piece number 5, we had 2 others lined up but one backed out. We haven’t heard back from the last one. Hopefully they will realize what a remarkable opportunity this is to own a piece of Iceland and get a lot of traffic to their homepage. Further more we hope that more will follow suit. So check out who bought the 5th piece, they’re hard to find but they are there.

Our first interview

So our first interview Friðgeir was interviewed by a Italian newspaper. They thought it was quite funny that we were selling Iceland bit by bit online. They took some pictures of Friðgeir outside Althingi (the Icelandic Parliament) holding a “Vér mótmælum öll” sign (protest sign quoting one of Icelands independence heroes, the qoute being “We protest, one and all”). The Italian interviewer said that he knew a guy from BBC that he would give the interview information to so maybe we’ll get two stories out of this. Publicity in Italy and Britain would surely help.
In other news we have lined up three possible buyers so we might be selling square #5,6 and 7 after the weekend. That would mean $700 in the bank for charity and restoration of Icelands image, not to shabby considering that the exchange rate is $1 to 13587 ISK (you do the math).

Selling Iceland to repay its debt

We want to try and repay some of the countries accumulating debt by “selling” it, by doing so we also want to protest the governments handling of the current financial situation

We want to show the countries that were affected by the collapse of the Icelandic banking system that the Icelandic people wish them nothing ill and would gladly pay them back if they could. So to show that Icelanders want to remain in good relations to their neighbours we will “sell” the country and use the proceeds for charity in the countries affected by the collapse of the banks. This is a symbolic gesture, not in our wildest dreams do we think that this initiative can pay off the entire debt.

We are going to sell pieces of Iceland for $100 each. We have divided a map of Iceland into 10.000 pieces. So “selling” Iceland could generate as much as 1.000.000 USD and we want to take that money (or however much we get) and use it for charitable causes in the countries that where hit by the collapse of the Icelandic banking system. We’ll ask the buyers to designate their money to a certain country. So if 35 % of buyers designate the UK and we sell for a total of 500.000 USD we’ll use 175.000 USD for a charitable cause in the UK.
